The 3G Sunset and how it will affect your Alarm.com service
You might be wondering: what even is the 3G Sunset? Simply put, the 3G sunset is the transition manufacturers and cellular carriers are making from 3G to 4G LTE (long-term evolution) networks. While not every manufacturer and carrier will be switching over immediately, some may make the change as soon as the end of 2019. The reason 3G is being phased out is simple: out with the old and in with the new. 4G LTE offers significantly improved bandwidth and speed and will help our devices keep up with the growing demand.
How Will This Affect Me?
If you are currently using a legacy 3G Alarm.com module, you will experience reduced (or even lost) data and functionality. This will only happen if you don’t switch to 4G LTE before your carrier drops the 3G network.
When Should I Make The Switch?
In order to maintain your current level of security and reliability, the switch must be made as soon as possible. While some carriers are not projected to make the switch until as late as 2022, some carriers like Verizon will drop 3G by the end of 2019.
